I get quite a few questions about nontoxic skincare, how best to use Beautycounter, and whether their products are truly safe and effective so I thought I'd compile them into a blog post for easy reading!

Skip to the parts that interest you most:

Acne/Blemish Prone Skin

What products do you recommend for dark spots?

The All Bright C Serum for sure — that's what it's made for! In a clinical study, 94% of participants said it reduced the appearance of dark spots after 8 weeks of use.

It also doesn't matter if the dark spots are on your face or back — skin is skin! I would also add in the Overnight Resurfacing Peel as its designed to promote skin cell turnover so it will lighten the dark spots much more quickly.

Best face wash to help prevent/treat acne?

There are 6 different types of acne and a lot of causes, so it's important to figure out what's best for your unique skin type. Short answer: Countercontrol is great at balancing excess oil.

Anti-Aging

Any must have products for anti-aging?

The Countertime Eye Renewal Cream for sure. It's noticeably lightened my under-eye area and even reduced my crow's feet!

Dry Skin

Best products to moisturize? My skin is so dry!

Countertime is going to be the most hydrating! You can also use the Cleansing Balm as a facial cleanser (with wash cloth) & an overnight moisturizing mask 1-2x a week

Some other helpful and inexpensive tips:

  • Be sure to exfoliate once a week to remove dry, dead skin cells which can prevent products from absorbing.
  • Mineral sunscreens can be drying so don't skip your moisturizer on those hot sunny days
  • Add electrolytes to your water to hydrate from the inside

Deodorant

Does the BC deodorant work? Will it make my underarms irritated?

I LOVE their deodorant. I know a lot of friends, clients, and myself have experienced skin sensitivity from using certain natural deodorants, but I've never experienced that with Beautycounter and have heard the same from those who've tried it!

As far as it working well, my husband Ryan also uses it so that's saying something

Any clean deodorant recommendations for men? Been looking everywhere for my husband but he’s picky.

A lot of my customers have started buying the sequoia scent for their hubbies! It’s new and the most masculine of the 4 scents. Ryan and I both still love the coconut.

How long does the deodorant last?

About 4 months with once daily use. I don't feel the need to reapply throughout the day, but if you do, it may last a little less long.

When to Use Products

When should I apply the vitamin C serum?

After cleansing and applying toner or essence (if using). You always apply serum before moisturizer. The moisturizer is what locks it in.

What order should I use the products?

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner/Essence
  3. Serum(s)
  4. Mositurizer
  5. Sunscreen, if using (I personally skip in the winter months)
  6. Makeup

I just ordered the AHA mask!! When do I use that vs. peel vs. charcoal mask?

The AHA mask is the “work horse” of your skincare routine, it's what going to get you the most benefits. You only have to use it 1-2x a week and it almost replaces a $150+ spa facial. It's meant for any skin type (even sensitive skin that can't normally tolerate common AHAs!)

It's meant to treat dull skin, hyperpigmentation, and large pores. It's much higher in antioxidants than other AHAs which makes it extremely powerful in neutralizing free radicals that contribute to premature aging.

The Charcoal Facial Mask is meant for oily or combination acne prone skin. It's great for decongestion. If you have dry skin that's not blemish prone it's not necessary.

If you have acne prone skin, use once a week. This is a great tool to have in your arsenal! You get it for free when you add Band of Beauty.

Now that I've added the AHA mask to my regular line up, I'm only doing this mask 1-2x a month and only my cheeks and nose where I need it. Saves me money!

The Overnight Resurfacing Peel is meant for maintenance throughout the week. It's a gentle chemical peel safe enough for pregnancy and breastfeeding. It resurfaces dead skin cells, improves skin texture, helps shrink pores, lightens hyperpigmentation and dark spots. It's an easy step because it replaces both the toner and serum in your nighttime routine. So if you're someone who likes minimal steps, this is for you.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Is Countertime safe for pregnancy?

Here's the 411:

Beautycounter's Countertime line
  • Beautycounter uses bakuchiol instead of retinol to formulate their anti-aging products. Retinol has some serious concerns for toxicity and can lead to birth defects, reproductive issues, and skin sensitivity. Bakuchiol is basically the plant-based version of retinol and has been clinically proven to be just as effective so you're literally not missing out on anything. Instead you’re gaining much more peace of mind!
  • I used Countertime (formulated with bakuchiol instead of retinol) while pregnant and while nursing with both kiddos. It scores I/10 on EWG & I've cross checked on PubMed. Haven't found any concerns!
  • Beautycounter also has a science advisory panel to include a reproductive specialist, pediatrician, and toxicologists that check each product against 23 health & safety endpoints.

Not here to give medical advice, so check with your doctor, but in my opinion, yes, as safe as you can possibly get in my book!!

Hair Care

Do you like the shampoo/conditioner? I have thick/wavy hair

I do!! Most nontoxic shampoos/conditioners are hard to get used to because they don’t lather well, but this one does and leaves my oily hair feeling so clean!

Makeup

Is the concealer coming back?

June 1! With a new and improved applicator wand + 7 additional shades!

Men's Products

What products does Ryan use?

Ryan loooooves to share his skincare routine and he's actually pretty consistent about it. He loves the Countertime Eye Renewal Cream, the Coconut Deo, Countercontrol Scrub, and Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion. I definitely had to talk him through how not to use SO MUCH. Because the fella was blowing through my skincare and I wasn't having it .

Joining As a Consultant

I have some friends interested in shopping BC, worth it to become a consultant or just get a referral link?

Honestly, we need more voices for this mission. My friend/mentor Sami just went to DC with Beautycounter to meet with Congress and it’s disturbing how little action they are taking to regulate personal care products.

With that being said, I’m always happy to create a link for you to share! Just fill out this quick form. You can earn up to 5 free + 5 half-off products and you can request them as often as you like. BUT when you’re a consultant, you can also do that AND earn a 25% commission Jump in here!

How much does it cost to sign up?

$50 if you're not a Band of Beauty member or $21 if you're a member — that's it! There are no requirements to purchase products or sales quotes. No strings attached and no icky stuff.

There is a $750 activity requirement every 6 months to maintain the discount. But if you don't hit it, there are no penalties! You just get bumped back down to a Band of Beauty member. You can also choose to sign up again if you like. If you decide to join as a business with me as your mentor, I promise you, you'll be able to hit the $750 easily. Most who join do it in their first month. All it takes is a couple hours a week and me on your team!

If you're ready, you can join here.
